Welcome
Hello! My name is Nick Asprea and welcome to More Than Meets the Eye: Harnessing the Power of Sound in Student Film. This website is my undergraduate thesis for the Honors program at Elon University. This thesis was completed under the mentorship of Dr. Todd Coleman.
What is this website?
The core goal of this site is to provide both an explanation and demonstration of the ways that sound can be utilized by filmmakers to create, reinforce, and/or alter meaning and emotions in their films. After routinely seeing sound being undervalued in student films, I wanted to create an easy-to-understand resource for all individuals involved in the filmmaking process. In particular, this guide is geared toward directors, sound designers, and composers.
This website explores topics such as the perception of film sound practice, creating meaning through music and sound, music psychology, and tips for student filmmakers. Additionally, you will find numerous examples of the discussed concepts. These will include both mainstream examples as well as my own examples created from student films. It is also important to establish what this guide is not. This is not a step-by-step how-to guide for sound design or film composition. While specific sound design or composition techniques may be discussed, the main focus of this website is on the powerful impact that sound and music can have on a film's narrative and how to more effectively harness that power.
